Avatar: The Way of Water | From New Zealand

The production of the second Avatar movie entered the production stage on August 15, 2017, and began pre-production with Manhattan Beach as the main filming location. Principal photography began on September 25, 2017, and was filmed concurrently with the third Avatar movie using a back-to-back approach. On November 23, director James Cameron stated that the production had been testing with actors for underwater motion capture scenes that would continue into January 2018. In May 2018, actress Zoe Saldana stated that shooting was “halfway” complete and that the production would soon finish the motion capture for the second and third movies before beginning a six-month live-action shoot in New Zealand. On June 8, 2018, Saldana completed her work on both the second and third Avatar movies, and Cameron announced that 130 days of motion capture had been completed. In November 2018, Cameron announced that principal photography was complete. In February 2019, producer Jon Landau stated that live-action shooting for the second and third Avatar movies would begin in the spring of 2019 in New Zealand. Later in the same month, Cameron confirmed that they had only completed the motion capture portion at that point.
